Atheism without Meaning

"Atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning." C. S. Lewis

You can't deny objective meaning with objective meaning.

J R R Tolkein made sure C.S Lewis converted to Catholicism; and bloody good for us all he did. Without that epiphany, we would never have had the privilege of reading some of the finest works of fiction of his age. Even a 'Gift Observed' would not have been possible if Lewis had not found his way to the light. A true man of letters in a time of secular irrelevancy in literature.

The thing that's so great about Lewis is that he's a peoples' scholar. He translated his great learning into a language accessible to the common man. As you say Doug, it was a time of literary irrelevancy because the literary considered it a virtue to write above the heads of the people.

A minor point of correction, Lewis never became a Catholic but joined the Church of England. When chided by Tolkien and other Catholic friends for not converting to Rome, he jokingly said he didn't want anything to do with their heresies.

I lived in ENG and attended a COE Choir Boy School...so the parallels to Catholicism were the same to me when your 9 years old. Singing everything, especially since it was a choir boy school, was great.

So I will adjust my thinking accordingly about Lewis. Thank you for the correction. Still, he would have made a great Catholic. COE is just as good.
